The OLSI Law Department Top 25 KPIs
Survey seeks to fill a gap in current metrics benchmarking data on
how law departments are performing in certain key measures.
The Law Department Top 25 KPI is the proposed list of metrics that
OLSI encourages all law departments to track pursuant to a
consistent list of definitions and methodologies, in order to allow
for effective “apples to apples” and “oranges to oranges”
comparisons.
The overall goal is to allow law departments to measure their
performance and engage in efforts to improve on performance pursuant
to their own target goals.
The Top 25 KPIs
In order to serve as an effective tool, OLSI limited the survey to a
proposed list of top 25 KPIs under several major categories: general
law department metrics, litigation matters, non-litigation matters,
intellectual property matters, external legal spending, knowledge
management and compliance. Tracking too many metrics makes it
difficult to analyze each metric effectively.
Some organizations, however, may find it useful to drill down into
more detail in certain key areas. OLSI has thus also developed a
list of additional
specialized metrics that law departments can track on their
own.
Instructions on Taking Survey
Organizational Responses to Surveys
The
survey questions concern metrics generally collected by an
organization as a whole.
We
encourage interested individuals to work with appropriate members of
their law
department to provide accurate responses to the Survey. The goal is
to have each
organization submit one Survey to provide metrics for that
organization. We are
interested in
feedback, however, from all individuals on how to improve
the Survey.

Providing Feedback on the Survey
With respect to all of these lists, OLSI invites the reader to
provide insight into how useful this information is or would be.
This iteration of the OLSI Survey constitutes a “pre-survey” survey
in that we hope it will serve as the foundation for much more useful
surveys in subsequent years.
